It is your average Monday morning and you’re heading to work. Are you thinking about the planning that went into making the door that opens to allow you on the tube or the seat that you sit on, the window that you’re vaguely looking out of as you sip your coffee? Or better yet are you thinking about why the building you work in was made the way it was? In reality, probably not. But when you take a minute to really think about the detail and work that goes into the things that we use in our everyday lives, it can all be thanked to Designers. Designers have the interesting task of meeting the expectation of users (us the consumers), while also completing heavy research and planning. My complete ignorance of this process was finally cleared away after my trip to the Design Museum. The main campaign at the Design Museum is to, “create an identity that is about growing up and not growing old”. And once I stepped inside the museum, that mission statement became much clearer to me.

With not even my two feet inside the museum, I am in love with the interior of the building. The detail and complexity of the John Pawson’s architecture was truly something compelling and yet even with all of the convoluted designs of the roof and various other places, the tone of building inside still was a relaxing one. After seeing this, I am immediately even more interested in the world of Design.

The first part of the museum to really catch my attention was a large, colourful sign. Each colour filled up the shape of small triangles, making the sign even more interesting. But the most appealing part of this sign is a continuous cycle of the three words, Designer, maker, and User in a bold black color. At first, I was confused as to why the words maker and user were being brought up. (I mean I am in the Design Museum). But once I stepped into the main parts of the museum, everything started to make more sense.

Designers. This is the first section of the museum that I see. By taking a look at some interesting images of Vespa’s and new fashion looks and by reading the background information, it really came to my attention as to how important designers are in the world. Without the intensive background research and creative thinking from designers we really would not be in the world, we live in today. One great example reached out to me in the designer’s section. It is the political area called, “agents of change”. When we think about political campaigns we are often so concerned with the political character or group that we forget about the hard work that goes into designing campaign posters, merchandise, and many other items. From the prohibition acts to Tony Blair and his Iraq crisis, “protest graphics have offered designers the opportunity to contribute their skills to causes they support. Individuals are stronger when they align with others in large groups, and designers can help gives these movements a voice”.

The next component of the museum is the makers. Once the designers have everything in set, the makers come into play. Without the hard work from the makers, the users would have no products at all.

Which brings me to the third and final group that I learned about at the museum, the users. The users are, in my opinion, the most important group to meet at the design museum. My reason for this is because without the users wanting things and demanding change, the designers would have no innovation to begin with and that leaves the makers without a job as well. The “interaction between people and brands that have come to define the modern world”, which is why the users are so important.  Like I said, without you and me, we would not have half the things we have in the world today.

In all, I think the museum was really compelling and it gave me a lot of insight into a topic that I was rather ignorant about. We often forget about the importance of particular things because we are so absorbed in our everyday lives. But I think that it is especially important to take a step back sometimes and understand the world around us. So if you are ever in London and wish to be diverse and change the tour guide for your trip, definitely take a wonder over to the Design Museum. It is the perfect place to go with family and friends and of course to see how many cool presents the designers have given to the world since its first birthday.

Museum Location: 224-238 Kensington High St, Kensington, London W8 6AG

*The main exhibition does not cost anything but special exhibitions do include a price, and those prices will vary.

Ciao readers! AND HAPPY 2018! As you know, in September 2017, I left the U.S to start my new life in London! Besides my complete laziness, this is one of my the main reasons as to why this blog has been lacking! But, one of my main resolutions for this year is to work more on this blog and show you guys some of the incredible adventures that I get up to while I am in Europe. So please stay tuned for further posts!

As for today, I will be showing you a sample itinerary to Jerusalem. I think it brings the world together in a very positive way. This is something I will always appreciate. I also thought I would add this trip to start to the New Year because it might give you some inspiration for trips this year. The Concrete Jungle:

Ciao everyone! Happy Sunday! This weekend, for me, has been a comforting one however I have also been working really hard on constructing my New York City Vlog (video blog) from my trip to NYC last week! Traveling to New York was INCREDIBLE and it really reminded me as to why I want to live in a city! Manhattan truly is a concrete jungle but I believe it’s an illustration of dreams in progress and a place where people can transform into the individual they desire to be. Later on in today’s NYC post I will introduce you to an individual who I met in New York, I believe he has a unique and motivating story to share. This apart of a new segment on my blog called the Peoples Story. So basically whenever I travel to a new place I will try to meet a new person who has a distinctive and encouraging story to share! So in today’s post, I will share my Manhattan adventure and introduce you to a very fascinating individual who I believe defines what New York City is all about.

Enjoy!

The Manhattan Adventure:

1.     Cuisine!

The first thing I will say about NYC is you have to indulge yourself with the fabulous food options! Every corner you turn there will be food and in all types of cuisines! BUT! Like any city there are couple of places that YOU HAVE TO make the trip to!

FullSizeRender-3.jpg

Shake Shack (Burger Joint)You may have already seen this in the Miami foods section of my blog, but Shake Shack is VERY popular in NYC and very reasonable! When I arrived to Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon this was the first place I went to! The menu offers a variety of burgers, chicken, hotdogs, and much more. My order was a shack burger with a vanilla milkshake. My friend and I also got regular fires and cheesy fries with bacon! The price was extremely reasonable and very tasty! This place has locations all over Manhattan so you shouldn’t have trouble finding it but, you may have a problem finding a seat inside due to its popularity!

FullSizeRender-4.jpg

The Street vendors are on every corner of the city and usually sell the same foods! These places are cheap and super tasty! Grab a hotdog or burger or maybe even just a bag of chips. The smell from the vans will drag you into them so be prepared to make a pit stop on your sigh setting adventure!

  •     Manhattan Uniques

Another piece of advice is, don’t be afraid to try places that aren’t as familiar. In New York I went to a couple of places that didn’t have a lot of tourists but instead had real New Yorkers! I think it’s always cool to eat where the locals eat because it gives you a taste of what their everyday life is like.

    TreeHaus MiMA

tree haus.jpg

The TreeHaus is on the healthier side of NYC eats so I can see why lots of locals come here! They specialize organic, non-GMO, gluten free, vegan, and local products. When I went to this place, I had an amazing sandwich with ham, lettuce, guacamole, and many more veggies! I finished the meal with a build your own smoothie with, banana, strawberries, raspberries, blue berries, Greek yogurt, peanut butter and honey! TreeHaus also has a coffee bar, wine bar, and hot food buffet! If you are looking for something different go to this place!

Location: 70 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036

Deli cafe.jpg

Broadway Deli & Café. This place was FULL of locals! From cops to construction builders it was very clear that this place was a popular one! I went here to get breakfast! I got a chocolate milk, eggs, sausage, and pancakes! It was just what the doctor ordered! It was perfect for a rainy morning in Manhattan. This place wasn’t five star looking but it was a five start in my belly! LOL!

Location: 515 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036

*When looking for a place to eat in NYC, look to see if the restaurant has an A outside. This an indicator that restaurant has passed their inspections and is clean and good for eating!

You can find more info about that here:

http://www1.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/rii/how-we-score-grade.pdf

2.     The Places to See

If your situation was similar to mine and you have a limited amount of time in the city then you’ll want to try and get the bus tour packages!  My recommendation here is to look online for cheaper prices than the actual company sellers on the street! I got a great package from online which included, 3 days’ bus tour of downtown, uptown, and midtown. It also included a riverboat cruise, night bus tour, and a landmark (we choose the Empire State). For being in Manhattan for a short period of time we did get to see everything we wanted to I highly recommend this!

1.     Midtown

IMG_4993.JPG

There is ALWAYS something happening here! The crowd size never disappears; in fact, I think it gets larger as the day goes on! Besides the entertainment from every direction, in times square you will find food places, coffee and cake shops, and clothing and gift stores! This is also where many of the tour buses pick up and drop off! Obviously times square is a must, I recommend you do it at night, the atmosphere is amazing and the bright lights make it the perfect picture spot for all of you photography lovers. Empire Sate: If you want great views of Manhattan and surrounding areas, then make sure to go up the Empire state! If you are scared of heights no need to worry, there are inside observation decks and the outside one has extremely high gates. The lines not too long and once you get to the top its totally worth it. You literally feel like you are on top of the world!

2.     Downtown Manhattan

With Downtown you will see wall street, the 9/11 memorial and also China Town and Little Italy. Wall street is cool, especially on weekdays because you will see all of the local business people grabbing lunch and talking with their colleagues. The 9/11 Memorial is still very emotional and there actually is a museum you can go into in memory of all those people who lost their lives on that horrific day. In the area is also a fabulous new mal filled with famous designers and cute little cafes! If you are traveling from New Jersey City this is where you will get the PATH train! Little Italy and China Town are great elements to New York! If you are craving a Italian food then I would make the trip to little Italy! All of the cheap designers are located in China town so, maybe after some Pizza you can head over and get a cheap Gucci bag!

3.     Uptown

Central Park.jpg

My favorite part of Uptown is the upper east side. This is where most of the money is in the city and boy it’s so cool! The Coffee shops here are extremely cute so I would make sure to save room for a quick afternoon snack here!  Lots of museum are also in this area the most popular being the Metropolitan museum! Located right next to that is the famous central park! Central Park is so peaceful and is the perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city traffic. There is also plenty actives for younger children so they don’t get bored! The upper West side is a place I haven’t really explore too much so I am hoping to head back to NYC soon and check it out in depth. Harlem is also up in this area which is where the famous Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr left their influence, a great place to check out also.

Of course there are numerous other places to visit in NYC but I just highlighted some of the popular places you will want to hit when you come! Don’t forget the famous Statue of Liberty!

  3.    Shopping!

Shopping in NYC is a must of course! You will find great deals and amazing products that will be calling your name!

5th-Avenue-53095.jpg

1.     Fifth Avenue

Of course, the famous fifth avenue! Here you will find all of the famous designers like Louis Vuitton, Ted Baker, DKNY and many others! If you are willing to spend the cash then I would take a ponder into these stores.

2.      Macy's Herald Square

This is the best Macys I have been to. I could literally spend the entire day in this place. From perfumes to cosmetics you WILL find something in this store. The free gifts that accompany the perfumes are certainly worth the investment. If your feeling hungry after your shopping then no need to worry, this Macys has food places all around inside you will find something that will fill the hole in your belly!

3.     Rituals

FullSizeRender-8.jpg

Rituals is my new favorite body shop! The smell that radiates from this place is amazing and you feel so relaxed just walking in. I liked rituals because it attended to my sensitive skin needs. The prices were extremely reasonable also and you can try any product on before making the final purchase! Make sure to check this place out!

Any street you walk on in NYC will have a shop that will appeal to you, so don’t worry if the places I listed about don’t charm to you, there are copious amount of options.

My main advice to anyone traveling to the big apple is to take it in, experience every little bit that you can because if you do so, you will have the best trip of your life. Let the city take you on a journey!

The Peoples Story:
Andrie the Uber Driver:

775da5b6c47f7d9bd56ff8662722c583--new-york-quotes-dream-come-true.jpg

My uber drive to Newark was one I will remember for a long time and it’s all thanks to our very special uber driver Andrie. Andrie moved to New York a year and a half ago from St. Petersburg, Russia. His English was very good but it was clear he was still learning. The passion from this guy was something so magical. He was an artist and an enthusiast of life. Whilst driving he said one thing that really defined New York for me. He said when people move to New York they leave their old life and gain a new one. He said that it’s a new opportunity to create a new you, that’s why immigrants started coming here in the first place. Andrie had left his two children behind in Russia and his x wife was now living with another man. Today Andrie shares an apparent in New York with his buddies and he enjoys working for uber because he liked meeting new people from all over the world. I choose to share this story with you all because I think everyone could use a little bit of Andrie’s charisma. Don’t be afraid to make the move to something that will greater you and your life. Take the opportunities, even if they scare you, because in the end, like Andrie, you will have a life that you will love and for me that is the most important thing in this world: Being Happy.

When thou art at Rome, do as they do at Rome.

When thou art at Rome, do as they do at Rome.

Ciao readers, today we are going to be stamping our passports and traveling to the Italian city of Rome! My first escapade to the eternal city was during the Summer of 2012 and ever since that voyage I have been in awe with the Italian culture and all that is has to offer (especially the extremely good looking boys). So, for today’s post we will be exploring the top five essentials that need to be done when you make your first trip to Rome!

1      Piazza di Spagna and Via Cola di Rienzo: The shopping of Rome

kjslkdfa.jpg

PIAZZA DI SPANGA

Pizza di Spanga is the most famous shopping district in Rome and leads up to the famous Spanish steps. Now, im not saying you have to buy something but you should take a stroll down this street and check out all of the Italian desingers like, Prada, Gucci, Etro, Dolce & Gabbana, Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, Missoni, Versace and also other large global brands. Via Cola di Rienzo is where you will find most of the Romans shopping. Located near the vaitican here you can find shops selling fashions, bags, shoes, and many more for reasonable prices! If you are looking for gift shops around the city you don’t have to worry as you can probably assume that they are everywhere! My advice to you when your shopping in Rome is to just expand your taste! Go into any shops that somewhat appeal to you! You never know what you might find!

2. Trastevere Neighborhood

Gelatoooo

Gelato

I just recently discovered the Trastevere Neighborhood through John Cabot University. When I went to Rome in April I had a cool opportunity to stay in an apartment in Trastevere and it was so cool! I like this area of Rome because its quitter than the main areas and yet it still holds a cute little atmosphere! My favorite spot in Trastevere  is Piazza Trilussa. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy some gelato and sometimes you might be able to listen to some live music by local Roman Musicians.

Caffè a Roma

3.  Pizza Della Rotonda

Pizza Della Rotonda is one of my favorite dining spots in Rome and of course has a perfect view of The Pantheon. The Pantheon,  was formally known to be a Roman Temple but is now a church. You can visit the Pantheon free of charge and intake the magnificence of the designs inside and the incredible structure that holds it up. When you walk out of the Pantheon you are in a little square called Piazza della Rotonda, in the middle there is a beautiful fountain that you can sit around if you need to take a rest before continuing your sightseeing journey or it can be a romantic spot to share with a loved one while you devour some gelato after finishing up your spaghetti carbonara. There are multiple resutraunts around the Pantheon and all of them offer the beautiful tastes of Italy and a great view of a Roman landmark.  You could even venture to one of these restaurants for a late night sweet treat and drink before heading to bed. The perfect time to go in my opinion is late at night when the stars are out and all you can hear is the sound of plates clinching together and splashes of the water hitting the foundation of the fountain.  Either way your going to have a cool dinnder experinace.

collos.jpg

il cOLOSSEO

4.  il colosseo (The Colosseum)

Next on the trip would be the Colosseum (insert the Gladiator soundtrack). The Colosseum is another beautiful landmark in Rome and as soon as you see it in person you will be in love with its architecture and how cool your pictures will turn out (lol)! I have been inside the Colosseum twice and both times were amazing, it’s crazy to think about the historical context that lives there and how it is still standing till this day! You can go on group tours or wander on your own, either way watch out for the steps….there are a little steep for my liking! Inside you will also find a gift store where you can find super cool historical books on the Colosseum and other unrelated stuff like cook books and towels. I haven’t had the chance to visit the Colosseum at night but I know that you can do a night tour which is something would like to do in the future. So day or night the Colosseum is a landmark that you must see  but remember and watch out for those steps!

Fontana di trevi

5. Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain)

Without a doubt the Trevi Fountain is my favorite tourist desirability to visit when I travel to Rome. For me, the Trevi Foutain holds a unique connotation compared to the rest of Rome’s famous landmarks. On top of its perfected architecture and the lavish blue water to accompany, I believe that the Trevi Foutain holds a secret message of hope to each one of its visitors.  Yes, when people travel to the fountain they want to document the flawless structure but they also want to throw a coin in the fountain in hopes that one of their wishes will come true. I think that is why I find the trevi so fascinating, I love the idea that millions of people from all over the world with different backgrounds come together to throw a coin in hopes that their aspirations will come true. For me, that is an illustration of magic and an expanse of prospect. My favorite mystic moment at the Trevi Fountain was during the summer of 2016, it was almost midnight and I was standing with my high school peers waiting for our teachers to guide us back to our hotel. There was lots of people at the fountain so the noise level was loud but then it got extremely quiet. I turned to my left and noticed a young lad stepping down on one knee proposing to his girlfriend, obviously the girl said yes, and in that moment the entire area of the trevi fountain filled with cheers and delight. That was when I knew that Rome and more specifically the trevi fountain was the most enchanted place in world. I was in admiration with the idea that it was midnight and the feelings of excitement and love were still as radiant as they were when it was the daylight! So when you make your trip to the Trevi, I highly recommend that you do it during the nighttime, I promise it’s the most charmed time to visit.

The Three Coin Saying:

1.     If you throw one coin in the fountain, you are destined to travel back to Rome

2.     If you throw two coins in you will fall in love with an Italian (YES PLEASE!)

3.     If you throw three coins in you will marry an Italian (YES PLEASE!)

Well that’s all from me today, if you liked what you saw on today’s post please make sure to come back and check out other columns and hopefully you’ll be planning a trip to Rome in the near future, I know I am!

grazie mille,

arrivederci,

Ash
